The exhibition was organized by the Yugoslav Commission for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries. Preparations began in March 1953, just days after Greece, Yugoslavia, and Turkey signed the Agreement of Friendship and Cooperation – better known as the Balkan Pact – on 28 February 1953.
Although the exhibition was titled 60 Paintings of Modern Yugoslav Art, it ultimately featured 66 works by 36 Yugoslav artists (31 men and 5 women), suggesting that additional works were included after the title had been established. The catalogue included an introductory essay by Đorđe Popović, who also attended the exhibition’s opening. After Athens, the exhibition was destined for Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt.
