India’s First Triennale of Contemporary World Art was held in 1968, the country’s first contribution to a now-common global art-exhibition format. Responding to shifting triangulations of contemporary art in India’s art institutions and international relations in the 1960s, the triennale reflects its organizers’ optimism in the capacity of art to enact change.
