This triennial was established in 1965 in East Berlin and organized by the Association of Fine Artists of the German Democratic Republic. The aim of this triennial-exhibition was to establish an international platform for graphic arts and its „progressive artistic forces.“ Over the years, the triennial grew in size and regional participation, bringing together works by hundreds of artists in East Berlin. From its second iteration in 1967 onwards, it also became a traveling exhibition that was shown in other socialist and non-socialist countries.
